6 things to know about the 2022 FIFA World Cup host country
The Gulf nations will be in the global spotlight when the 2022 FIFA World Cup kicks off in Qatar on his November 20th. Since FIFA awarded his 2010 tournament to Qatar, the plight of the country's migrant workers has become widely known. Migrants and domestic workers continue to face a range of abuses, including wage theft, forced labor and exploitation. But the treatment of migrant workers is just one of many violations that make up the state's troubling human rights record. Qatari authorities are suppressing freedom of expression, freedom of the press and freedom of association. Unfair trials are a massive concern. Women continue to be discriminated against in law and practice. And the law continues to discriminate against her LGBT people.
Freedom of speech and Freedom of the press.
Qatari authorities use abusive laws to suppress those critical of the state, including both citizens and migrant workers. Amnesty International has documented cases of Qatari citizens being arbitrarily arrested after criticizing the government and convicted after unfair trials based on coerced confessions. Meanwhile, Malcolm Bidali, a Kenyan security officer, blogger and migrant rights activist, was forcibly disappeared and held in solitary confinement for a month to raise awareness of the plight of migrant workers. Qatar has few independent or critical media outlets. Authorities in the country restricted press freedom by imposing restrictions on broadcasters, including banning filming in certain locations such as government buildings, hospitals, universities, migrant worker shelters, and private homes.
Freedom of association and assembly
Migrant workers are still not allowed to form or join trade unions. Instead, they are allowed to form joint committees, which are employer-led employee representative initiatives. But so far the initiative is not an obligation, covers only his 2% of workers and is far from the basic right to form and join trade unions. Citizens and migrant workers alike face obstacles to peaceful assembly. For example, in August 2022, hundreds of migrant workers were arrested and deported by state authorities after protesting in the streets of Doha after their companies repeatedly failed to pay their wages.
Unfair process of Trials
A fair trial cannot be guaranteed in Qatar. Over the past decade, Amnesty International has documented cases of unfair trials in which defendants' allegations of torture and ill-treatment were not investigated and sentenced on the basis of coerced "confessions". Defendants were often interrogated in isolation without access to a lawyer or interpreter. For example, Jordanian national Abdullah Ibais is serving a three-year sentence based on a "confession" he said was obtained under duress after an unfair trial in Qatar.
Women's Rights
In Qatar, laws and practices continue to discriminate against women. Under the guardianship system, women require the permission of a male guardian (usually a husband, father, brother, grandfather or uncle) to marry, study on government scholarships, work in many government agencies, travel abroad. Family law penalizes women who face the hardships and financial disadvantages of divorce more than men. Women are also inadequately protected from domestic and sexual violence.
LGBT rights
Qatari law discriminates against her LGBT people. Section 296(3) of the Penal Code criminalizes various consensual same-sex sexual acts.
